SMALLPOX
– NEVER MORE
Smallpox is
an acute contagious disease, which has most probably haunted the mankind
long time before the pharaohs. Severe flu-like disease was accompanied by
fevers, rash and excruciating pains. Mortality fluctuated between 20 to 30
per cent and patients were slowly dying in pains and fully aware of their
desperate state. Those, who survived, often ended up blemished or blind.
Deaths attributed to smallpox exceed the number of all war victims
historically.
World Health
Organization (WHO) has stood up to this challenge and through aimed global
programme succeeded in eradicating the disease. WHO played a unique role in
the global fight against variola – not only that it secured mobilisation of
resources and material support (including vaccines and transportation), but
the Organization also coordinated the entire eradication effort worldwide.
Altogether, about 250 thousand men and women contributed to national
eradication programmes. During the intensive eradication period, there were
up to 700 WHO experts working in individual affected countries. Czech and
Slovak doctors, led by Professor Karel Raška, also significantly contributed
to this achievement. Participation of our epidemiologists has been highly
appreciated by both World Health Organization and the affected Member
States.
The aim of
this exhibition is to inform our general and expert public about this
unprecedented success of the World Health Organization and Czech and Slovak
epidemiology.
